Bursaries are funded for workers who wish to complete courses and further their studies. Furthermore, 65 high school learners have their school fees subsidised. Along with this, the Bovlei Community Centre is supported, incorporating a library that makes books available for all ages, a computer centre, a medical clinic where health workers are on duty full time, a community meeting hall, and a counselling office. These initiatives have had a positive impact on the education and well-being of the community.
An example of this is Leshwill van Rooyen’s story, the eldest of Lisbeth Cupido’s three sons. “At first Leshwill didn’t do very well at school,” recalls Lisbeth. “At the end of Grade 3 his marks were poor. The school wanted to push him through to Grade 4 but I said NO! Leshwill was very embarrassed, but I made him repeat Grade 3 and since then his marks just got better and better. I made sure I attended every school meeting and sports event and I made sure I knew what was going on at school – I served on the school’s governing body. I want my children to see that I care and I am interested in them.” Leshwill went on to be nominated as Head Boy of Bergrivier High School, focused on his studies, coming in the top ten in his grade every year. His dream is to become an accountant and so he is currently studying Financial Management at Boland College in Paarl. He has classes four days a week, but he is off on a Wednesday and so works in the Bosman Accounts office gaining valuable experience and earning some pocket money to cover transport and data costs. “I am so excited for the future,” he shares. “Every day I learn something new and I get closer to my goal of becoming an Accountant.”
The Fairtrade Premium is an extra sum paid on every Fairtrade sale. Farmers and workers decide together how to spend it.
We have lived together, worked together and cared for each other on this farm for centuries, passing on values and skills from one generation to another, over and over again.
